Workshop facilitator, editor, and mentor

Creative writing workshop facilitator

I have a decade’s experience as a creative writing teacher. My clients have included The Linenhall Arts Centre, Big Smoke Writing Factory, Creative Writing Ink, Roscommon Arts Centre, Dingle Literary Festival, and University of Galway.
If you would like to hire me to teach creative writing, you can contact me This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
Currently I offer weekly in-person workshops through the Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar, Co. Mayo.
I can travel within the island of Ireland for day long workshops.

Mentor and Editor

In all my workshops I enjoy the one-on-one aspect of seeing a writer’s work in its early stages and providing guidance on where they may choose to go with it.
Following requests from former workshop participants I have opened up my creative feedback services to include both editorial manuscript assessments and mentoring.
I work one on one with writers developing their body of work, from those who have not yet published a book, to more experienced writers seeking a close eye and confidential ear.
I believe close collaboration between a writer and their early editor is essential in bringing a piece of work to life.
I work primarily with poets and writers of creative non-fiction and hybrid forms, though will make occasional exceptions for fiction when I believe the fit is right.

Editing

As an editor I work on developmental edits and line edits.
Developmental edits: this covers the structure, characters, voice, concept, and the bigger picture of the manuscript.
Line edits: this is a detailed line by line editorial.
Please note I do not offer copy editing or proof reading.

Mentoring

Mentoring is a more prolonged and committed feedback relationship. I offer between 6- and 12-month packages, consisting of written feedback on a full manuscript, writing career guidance, and monthly zoom sessions.  Each month you will send me a certain amount of your book, I will send you back written feedback and we will meet on zoom to discuss. These sessions are yours to use as you wish, and we can outline a plan to make the most of our time together early on.

Testimonials from past pupils and clients

“I cannot speak highly enough of this course.  I found it inspirational and the feedback I received was kind, helpful and encouraging.”
– Ann, past participant of ‘Introduction to writing poetry’

“I really enjoyed this course with Alice Kinsella. She stretched me outside my comfort zone, but that is all to the good. I loved the topics, and found myself writing about things I had never written about before. Poetry, I find, is a great way of finding healing for the past, finding joy in the small things of life, and a desire to make each poem the best I can. Alice’s comments were helpful and insightful, and I sensed her delight in each poem I offered, as if she were opening up a gift each time she read one. Alice is delightful to work for and a very encouraging and discerning tutor.”
– Angela, past participant of ‘Introduction to writing poetry’

“My poetic imagination took several leaps through Alice Kinsella's Introduction to Writing Poetry course.  I was able to identify my strengths, but more importantly through Alice's exercises and questions, I could also see the weak spots of my writing, the things i wasn't enjoying about my own writing - and I found this invaluable.  Alice's imagination is wonderful and i hope that i absorbed some of it.  Her feedback was helpful because it wasn't purely positive - some great constructive ideas.  Thoroughly enjoyable and worthwhile.”
– Anne, past participant of ‘Introduction to writing poetry’

‘Alice helped me find a clear path through my manuscript when I couldn’t see the wood from the trees'.
